The subway and the monorail were entirely different and separate. In fact, the monorail predates the subway by years.
The monorail was small, barely enough room for a pre-teen, and went through the storage area of Leonard's, where they had
created Christmas scenes at various points for the delight of the riders. I remember this all very well, because my grandpa, James Suratt, was a Leonard's Santa until
his death in 1957. And I remember the
Lionel trains, displayed behind chicken wire
to keep envious little hands like mine from
derailing the cars. The ride was a nickel,
the red candy apples also a nickel, the
memories, priceless.

The 3 brothers shown are an offshoot of our family. My mothers maiden name was also Robinson. The father was named John and Mother, Jannetta or some variation. The family consisted of only the 3 brothers and 4 sisters and they did originate in ohio and also migrated to Knoxville, Iowa. One brother is buried in DeWitt cemetery, Knoxville and one in Graceland cemetery, Knoxville. Last brother moved to Missouri and is buried in Centralia cemetery, Centralia, boone county, Missouri. All the sisters are buried in same two cemeteries in knoxville iowa. I have the names of all if you need them or you get them from the other source reply Would love to know more about the other source and info to see if it collaborates with mine. You can get some info with archives to Knoxville Journal newspaper, special edition 1925 or 1930... cant remember which..

I'm a native Texan and raised in Fort Worth,Texas. My father & mother both worked and retired from General Dynamic's
my father actually started working there when it was Convair. Your pictures brought back some forgotten memories . I saw Gone with the Wind at the old Worth theater and my Aunt lived about 10 minutes from Seminary South- I remember going there when it was first opened. I went to Brewer High School and graduated in 1971.
Fort Worth has changed a lot like you mentioned. BTW, my Mom was working at Montgomery Wards when it flooded.

Loved all of your articles. I had forgotten the kids at Shulkey talking about the man in the moon--I would never have dreamed of calling.

I went to Bruce Shulkey (my mother went to school with his daughter, Nancy, at Pascal) from 1960-1964. After the fourth grade, we moved to a house my parents had just built in the Hallmark addition of FW. This was located in the Everman school district.

I especially enjoyed your article on Seminary South. Bought my first copy of the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings there.

My grandfather used to play golf at Katy Lake before it was drained for Seminary South.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Best wishes!

The Robinson Giants ARE a part of our family tree. My mother's maiden name is Robinson, and we have the family tree quite a ways back. I'd be happy to share what we've learned.

Yeah, for whatever reason I was searching for this place today. Having grown up in Houston and been all over Texas for vacations, I was a little confused as to the name of the place. I was looking at Wonder World for a while. Finally I typed in mermaid and BAM Aquarina Springs came up. I am so upset to learn that it pretty much died in 1996. I was hoping to go there this summer. UGH! Well thanks for the memories!

I must have skimmed your post so quickly the first time that I missed your comment about Weatherford. After moving to the east coast and back again with my Dad's government job, we ended up in Mineral Wells, where I attended 9th, thru 11th grades.

Ohmygosh Dave G your post could have been written by me...right down to the segregated water fountains! I've been telling the story for years about the first time I saw 'colored' and 'white' above the fountains and how bad it made me feel, even as a little girl. (I was a white kid from the suburbs.) I asked my mother why they did that and she said, 'It's wrong honey. Very wrong. But you should still follow the rules when you're out in public like this.'

But the reason I googled Leonard's is because I'm looking for some kind of confirmation that my memories of their 'Toyland' are correct. We moved to Dallas when I was in second grade and never went to Leonard's after that, and my sister is four years younger and remembers nothing about it. Did the subway take you inside the bldg and run around the upper level of the toyland area? Was toyland in the basement? Was Santa elevated...like at the top of a 'mountain?' Did patrons walk up steps on the right side of Santa and then go down on the left side of the mountain? Or did I dream all of this?
